Meet Author Benjamin Plumb

Benjamin Plumb’s life story is one of reinvention. A Harvard Business School MBA and former U.S. Army intelligence officer in Vietnam, he spent decades pursuing success through a self-imposed “winning recipe” that ultimately left him unfulfilled.

“As soon as I stopped trying to fix my introversion and started living openly as an introvert,” he says, “everything changed. I found my niche as a writer and turned my life around.”

Benjamin now lives in the Tampa Bay area with his wife of over forty years, Sandy, where he continues to write, reflect, and advocate for authentic living.

He is the author of two acclaimed works:

  • The Satisfied Introvert (2022 and the updated 2025 edition)
  • First Aid for Introverts in an Extroverted Workplace

The Inspiration Behind The Satisfied Introvert

Benjamin’s latest book, The Satisfied Introvert: How I Broke Free from the False Self I Created and Started Living Authentically (So Can You), is a profound exploration of self-discovery and acceptance.

After publishing the first edition in 2022, Benjamin realized he could take his message even further.

“I saw that readers needed more practical guidance on detaching from their introvert ‘winning recipe,’” he explains.

The 2025 edition expands on this with:

  • A new chapter on understanding and identifying your own “recipe” and its costs
  • Reflective questions and practical exercises at the end of each chapter
  • Twelve Tools of Detachment collected in a new appendix

The result is both an inspirational memoir and a hands-on guide for readers seeking to live authentically as introverts in an extroverted world.

A Night Owl’s Writing Routine

Benjamin’s writing habits are anything but typical.

“I go to bed around 2:00 in the afternoon, get up at 10:00 at night, and write all night long,” he says.

This unusual schedule gives him the peace and focus he needs to think deeply and write without interruption the quiet hours matching his natural rhythm as an introvert.

The Authors Who Shaped His Perspective

Few books have influenced Benjamin as deeply as Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking.

“It was the first time I truly understood that I didn’t have a defect to fix,” he says. “Her work helped me see introversion as a strength, not a limitation.”

Cain’s influence is clear throughout Benjamin’s writing both authors share a passion for reframing introversion as a path to authenticity and purpose.

What He’s Working on Now

Benjamin is currently writing a prequel titled The Grounded Introvert: How I Tamed My Flight Reflex and Found a Steadier Quiet (So Can You).

The book will feature 36 short stories from his time studying abroad in France in 1963, when he was just 22 years old.

“At the beginning of that trip, I was so withdrawn that I rode most of the way from San Francisco to Paris under an airline blanket,” he recalls. “By the end, I had learned to stay present, even when overwhelmed by extroversion.”

The upcoming work explores how those formative experiences helped him embrace his introversion and recognize the seven natural strengths that quiet people bring to an increasingly extroverted world.

How He Promotes His Books

Marketing doesn’t come naturally to Benjamin and that’s exactly why his partnership with Greenleaf Book Group has been such a good fit.

“As an introvert, the typical marketing grind just isn’t me,” he admits. “No podcasts, no speaking tours just thoughtful, behind-the-scenes work.”

Greenleaf’s hybrid publishing model allows him to maintain full creative control and earn higher royalties, while the publisher handles much of the outreach and promotion.

“Hybrid publishing is more expensive,” he adds, “but it’s worth it if you want both professionalism and independence.”

Advice for New Authors

Benjamin offers two pieces of advice for aspiring writers:

  1. Keep a journal. “I documented most of the 60 years covered in The Satisfied Introvert. Those journals were invaluable when reconstructing vivid stories from my past.”
  2. Consider a hybrid publisher. “You’ll retain control of your work and avoid giving away royalties, especially if you’re not drawn to self-promotion.”

The Best Advice He Has Ever Heard

“As an introvert, you have no defect to fix,” Benjamin says firmly. “Once you understand that deeply, you can stop pretending to be someone else and start living authentically.”

That mindset forms the foundation of all his work empowering quiet individuals to find confidence and peace in who they truly are.

What He’s Reading Now

Benjamin is currently reading Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era by James McPherson, part of the Oxford History of the United States series.

What’s Next for Benjamin Plumb

Next on his list: finishing The Grounded Introvert and launching his new author website in early September 2025, which will feature updated material and expanded resources for readers.

Books He Would Bring to a Desert Island

If stranded on a desert island, Benjamin would bring:

  1. Quiet by Susan Cain “to keep my head screwed on as an introvert.”
  2. Comparative Grammar of Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French to study languages and stay mentally sharp.
  3. The Singularity Is Near by Ray Kurzweil “because the future of humanity fascinates me.”
