Meet Author Alex Hunter
Alex Hunter’s journey into writing began like many others with a love for stories and a busy life that kept getting in the way. After years of dabbling with ideas, a sudden job layoff became the unexpected turning point that pushed him to finally take his craft seriously.
“I figured I could either sit around in my joggers watching Netflix or do something useful with all this free time,” Alex laughs. “So I decided to write.”
That decision led to the creation of his debut novel, The Harvest, a dark and haunting story born from one terrifying dream that refused to fade.
The Inspiration Behind The Harvest
The Harvest began with an unforgettable nightmare. Instead of brushing it off, Alex decided to explore it further.
“I had this intense, vivid dream that stuck with me,” he recalls. “I thought, ‘If that scared me, it’ll scare other people too.’ So I built an entire story around it. And it’s still scary!”
What started as a fleeting moment of fear became a chilling novel that captures the essence of psychological and supernatural horror.
Writing Habits That Keep the Creativity Flowing
Alex’s approach to writing might sound strange to some, but it works perfectly for him.
“My partner thinks it’s odd that I can stop mid-sentence, go shopping, eat dinner, whatever and then come back hours later and pick up right where I left off,” he says. “It’s just how my brain works.”
That ability to dive in and out of a story without losing momentum has helped him balance writing with everyday life.
Authors Who Have Influenced His Work
Like most horror fans, Alex’s reading roots trace back to the genre’s legends.
“The Rats by James Herbert was my first true horror novel,” he says. “Later in life, I actually sold him a TV, which still makes me smile.”
He also draws inspiration from Stephen King, Clive Barker, and Ramsey Campbell, while his admiration for Anne Tyler’s precise, economical prose has shaped the rhythm and clarity of his own writing.
“Anne Tyler never wastes a word,” Alex notes. “Her ability to make every sentence matter is something I really admire.”
What He’s Working on Now
Since publishing The Harvest, Alex hasn’t slowed down. He has already finished two new horror novels, each distinct in theme and tone, and is currently experimenting with a screenplay.
“I wanted to try a different kind of storytelling,” he says. “Writing for the screen flexes a different creative muscle it’s a challenge, but a rewarding one.”
Connecting with Readers and the Horror Community
For Alex, promotion isn’t just about selling books; it’s about connecting with people who love the genre as much as he does.
“The horror community is amazing,” he says. “Readers are always looking for stories that make them think or give them nightmares, and other authors are great at sharing and supporting each other’s work.”
He engages directly with fans on social media and through interviews, finding that personal interaction is the best way to build a loyal audience.
Advice for New Authors
Alex’s advice to emerging writers is refreshingly practical.
“Just keep at it,” he encourages. “Don’t worry if your first draft is a mess it probably will be. The important thing is to get the words down. You can fix them later.”
He believes persistence and self-discipline are more important than perfection during the early stages of writing.
The Best Advice He Has Ever Heard
Unsurprisingly, one of Alex’s favorite pieces of writing wisdom comes from the master of horror himself.
“Stephen King said it best: ‘Read a lot, write a lot.’ That’s really all there is to it.”
What He’s Reading Now
Alex is currently revisiting one of his all-time favorites, Stephen King’s The Stand, a novel that continues to influence his understanding of character, atmosphere, and tension.
What’s Next for Alex Hunter
With two finished novels ready for release, the next chapter of Alex’s career looks exciting. His upcoming book, The House That Screamed, is slated for publication in June 2026.
“It’s another horror story, but very different from The Harvest,” he teases. “Each book takes me somewhere new creatively.”
Books He Would Take to a Desert Island
If stranded on a deserted island, Alex knows exactly which books would keep him company:
- IT by Stephen King
- The Gray House by Mariam Petrosyan
- The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
“The Gray House is one I urge everyone to read,” he adds. “It’s strange, beautiful, and unforgettable.”
