Writing Habits That Shape Her Work
Every writer has a creative rhythm, and for Dr. McKenzie-Klemm, that process begins with notes lots of them.
“I always turn my creative notes into book notes,” she says. “Whenever I have a thought or idea, I jot it down in sentences or fragments. Later, I revisit those ideas to see which ones fit the story I’m working on.”
If an idea doesn’t fit her current project, she files it away as a potential character, setting, or theme for future books. This method keeps her creativity flowing and ensures that no spark of inspiration is ever lost.
Authors Who Have Influenced Her
Kimberly draws inspiration from some of the world’s most iconic and influential writers, each of whom has helped shape her storytelling voice.
She admires Anne Rice for her lush gothic prose, Margaret Atwood for her intellect and feminist insight, Tom Clancy for his mastery of tension and realism, and Mark Twain for his wit and timeless observations of humanity.
These authors remind her that great writing balances imagination, truth, and courage qualities she strives to embody in her own work.

Advice for Aspiring Authors
Dr. McKenzie-Klemm’s advice to new writers is both simple and profound: never give up.
She recalls her long journey to publish her first book, The Rest Room, which took seven years from the first draft to publication.
“I wrote for three years before sending it to a publisher,” she says. “He told me to ‘clean it up and send it back in a year.’ I put it aside, rewrote it over the next two or three years, and finally resubmitted it. He loved the rewrite and offered me a contract.”
Though that publisher later closed his business, the experience taught her persistence, patience, and confidence in her voice lessons she continues to share with emerging writers.
The Best Advice She Has Ever Received
When Kimberly was a high school sophomore, she won a short story writing competition that changed the way she saw herself as a writer.
